Part of Living in Antwerp for a while
Where can you live for a while after a separation in Antwerp?
After a separation, most people first stay with family or friends, rent a furnished place for a few weeks or months, or stay in the family home by agreement. A furnished stay, such as temporary housing in Antwerp, gives you time to decide on a permanent home without signing a long lease in a hurry.

You have decided to live apart, or the decision was made for you. Now one of you needs somewhere to sleep, ideally close to work and to the children’s school. This guide sticks to the practical side: where you can stay, what to check, and where to find help.
Where to live after a separation: what are your options?
Where to live after a separation depends on three things. How quickly do you need to leave, how long will it last, and do the children stay with you? Most people in Antwerp choose one of the options below for the first weeks or months.
Options for the first months after a separation
| Option | Works best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Stay in the family home by agreement | A calm separation with clear arrangements | Living together during the separation can be tense |
| Family or friends | The first days or weeks | Little privacy; hard to have the children over |
| Hotel | A few nights | No kitchen in most rooms; no space for the children |
| Furnished apartment stay | Weeks to months while you decide | No address registration at the apartment |
| A new lease | When you know where you want to live | A long commitment, a deposit and an empty home to furnish |
Many people move in two steps: a temporary place first, then a permanent home once the arrangements are clearer. For the bigger picture of living in Antwerp for a few months, see our main guide.
Who stays in the family home after a separation?
Who stays in the family home after a separation is something the partners agree on, or a judge decides. For married couples, Notaris.be explains that either partner can ask the family court for urgent provisional measures. The judge can then decide that you live apart and where the children stay. These measures are temporary and can be changed.
Hoost cannot advise on this, but a lawyer, a notary or a family mediator can. The Belgian notaries’ page on measures for the children and the family home is a good start. If you do not feel safe at home, call the police first.
Temporary accommodation for you and your children
Temporary accommodation after a separation works best when the children can sleep over with you from the start. A place with a second bedroom, a kitchen and a table to eat together keeps their routine as normal as possible. That matters more than the neighbourhood in the first weeks.
At Hoost, three of the four apartments have two bedrooms and sleep up to 4. Each bedroom has a double bed, so two children can share a room. A cot and a high chair are available on request. The building is in Antwerp South, near Middelheim Park, with trams 2 and 6 stopping close by. If outdoor space matters, the first-floor apartment with terrace has a terrace with an outdoor table.
Note
Pets are not allowed at Hoost. If the family dog moves with you, a furnished apartment here will not work.
Renting after a separation: a furnished stay or a lease?
Renting after a separation often starts with a short, furnished stay and continues with a lease. A furnished stay asks for no furniture, no energy contracts and no deposit at Hoost. A lease gives you a stable address, but it takes time to find, sign and furnish.
What a stay at Hoost looks like in practice:
- From 2 nights to 6 months per booking; a longer stay continues with a new booking.
- Ready to live in: a kitchen with cooking basics, bed linen, towels, a TV and a dining table.
- Included: electricity, heating and water.
- Work from home: a dedicated workspace with Ethernet in every apartment.
- Laundry: a shared washing machine and dryer in the building.
- Quiet arrival: self check-in with a lockbox from 15:00.
- Flexible dates: changes are possible when the new dates are free. Remaining nights are not refunded if you leave early, except in an emergency.
Which address do you use after a separation?
Your address after a separation depends on whether you move for good. Stad Antwerpen says that anyone who moves must report the new address within 8 working days. A police officer then checks that you really live there. Vlaanderen.be gives the same rule for every Flemish municipality.
You cannot register your address at Hoost: your domicile stays elsewhere during the stay. Your registered address can matter for the children’s arrangements and for official letters. Ask the city’s address desk, or your lawyer, before you change anything. Our guide to registering your address in Antwerp explains when registration is required.
For support beyond housing, the CAW (Centrum Algemeen Welzijnswerk) offers free and confidential help with relationships, family and housing.
When Hoost is not the right choice
Hoost is not the right place for every situation after a separation. Look elsewhere if:
- you need to register your address where you stay, for example for official arrangements about the children;
- you already know you want to stay longer than 6 months in one place, with one contract;
- you move with a pet;
- you need parking on site;
- you want to stay in a specific part of town, close to the children’s school.
When none of these apply, a furnished apartment gives you a calm base while you work things out. For the next steps in settling into the city for a while, read our living guide. If the family home is changing owner as well, our guide to bridging accommodation between two homes may help.
