By Fern Thanaporn Uparirat, Hoost · Updated

You are planning a stay in the south of Antwerp, for a family visit, a hospital stay, a match or a fair. You want to know what the area is really like, and how far the park and the centre are.

In this guide:

What is Middelheim Park, and is the Middelheim Museum free?

Middelheim Park is part of the Nachtegalenpark, a 90-hectare green belt south of the city centre. Its 29 hectares hold the Middelheim Museum, an open-air sculpture park. According to the Middelheim Museum visitor page, admission is free and no ticket is needed.

The city of Antwerp bought the whole area in 1910, when it was still private land owned by merchants. Today the Nachtegalenpark joins three parks: Vogelzang, Den Brandt and Middelheim. The city also mentions a play forest in the park.

The museum is open every day except Monday. As stated by the museum on 14 October 2026, the hours are:

  • October to March: 10:00 to 17:00
  • April and September: 10:00 to 19:00
  • May to August: 10:00 to 20:00

The museum also opens on Easter Monday and Whit Monday. It closes on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, and at 15:00 on 24 and 31 December. The park can close in a storm, so check before you go.

There are nine entrances; the main one is at Middelheimlaan 61. Start at the visitor pavilion between the main entrance and the castle. It has a park map, lockers, a water point and the shop. Picnics are welcome.

Note

The museum is restoring the Middelheim castle from October 2026, with completion expected in 2028. The museum, the pavilion and most of the art park stay open. The castle and the café MIKA are closed, and some works may be moved.

For children, the museum hands out a free activity booklet at the pavilion. We cover more ideas in our list of family days out from Antwerp South.

What is Antwerp South near Middelheim Park like to stay in?

Antwerp South near Middelheim Park is a residential, green part of the city, not a tourist quarter. The streets are quieter than the centre, with fewer bars and late-night restaurants. Most visitors take the tram into town for the old city, shopping and nightlife.

That trade-off suits some stays well. Families like the space and the park on the doorstep. People visiting a patient at ZAS Middelheim want calm evenings. Fair and match visitors want to be close to the venue, not across town.

If you want to step out of the door into the historic centre, this is not that. The Grote Markt is about 4.2 km away in a straight line. Plan on the tram, a bike or a car for each trip into town.

How do you get around from Antwerp South by tram?

Trams 2 and 6 are the main links from Antwerp South to the rest of Antwerp. Both stop near the Hoost building. De Lijn says both lines run via Harmoniepark and Antwerpen-Centraal, and both pass Antwerp Expo.

De Lijn lists tram 6 from P+R Olympiade to P+R Luchtbal and tram 2 from Hoboken to P+R Merksem. Both run about 8 times an hour at peak and 6 times off-peak. Check the De Lijn app for works and diversions before you travel.

Tickets, stops and contactless payment are in our guide to getting around by tram 2 and 6. Drivers should read about the LEZ and park-and-ride options: the building is outside the low-emission zone, and P+R Olympiade is about 0.2 km away. There is no parking on site.

From Antwerpen-Centraal or Berchem you can catch a train to other cities. See which day trips by train work from Antwerp.

What is near Middelheim Park: hospitals, Expo and the Olympic Stadium?

Middelheim Park sits among several of the busiest places in south Antwerp. ZAS Middelheim and the ZAS Paola children’s hospital share one site at Lindendreef 1, according to ZAS. Antwerp Expo and the Olympic Stadium are both closer to the Hoost building than the park itself.

Distances from the Hoost building (straight line, OpenStreetMap, 14 October 2026)

Place Distance What it is
P+R Olympiade about 0.2 km Park-and-ride, end of tram 6
Olympic Stadium about 0.5 km Home of K Beerschot VA, 1920 Olympic venue
Antwerp Expo about 1.2 km Trade fairs and events
Middelheim Park about 1.9 km Park and open-air museum
ZAS Middelheim about 2.1 km General hospital, ZAS Paola on the same site
ZAS Augustinus about 2.3 km General hospital in Wilrijk
UZA about 3.4 km University hospital
Berchem station about 3.5 km Trains
Antwerpen-Centraal about 4.3 km Main railway station

These are straight-line distances, not routes, so real trips are longer. We do not give walking or tram times, because we have not measured them.

The Olympic Stadium hosted the 1920 Games, the VIIth Olympiad, as the Beerschot club history explains. The street name VIIde-Olympiadelaan refers to them. Read our guide to getting to the Olympic Stadium for a match or event.

Is Antwerp South near Middelheim Park handy for a hospital visit?

Antwerp South near Middelheim Park is one of the closest areas to the ZAS Middelheim campus. The hospital and the art park are neighbours: the museum even runs a sound artwork at the link between the two. ZAS Middelheim is about 2.1 km from the Hoost building.

ZAS lists three relevant locations nearby:

  • ZAS Middelheim, a general hospital at Lindendreef 1, 2020 Antwerpen.
  • ZAS Paola, the children’s hospital, on the same site.
  • ZAS Augustinus, a general hospital at Oosterveldlaan 24, 2610 Wilrijk, about 2.3 km away.

UZA, the university hospital, is about 3.4 km away. Visiting hours and parking rules belong to the hospitals, so check their own sites.

Families of patients often stay longer than they planned. A kitchen helps on long days, and dates can be changed if the new dates are free. A stay can run from 2 nights up to 6 months in one booking.

Is Antwerp South near Middelheim Park a good base for a weekend or the Christmas market?

Antwerp South near Middelheim Park works as a weekend base if you are happy to take the tram in each day. You get a quieter night and a park for the morning, and trams 2 and 6 bring you to Centraal. Our minimum stay of 2 nights fits a weekend.

When Hoost is not the right choice

Hoost is not the right choice if you need things we do not offer. Be honest with yourself about these before you send your dates:

  • You bring a pet.
  • You want to live in the historic centre, with bars and restaurants at the door.

If none of these apply, send us your dates and tell us who is travelling. We reply with what is free and what suits your stay.
