Part of Antwerp South and around
How does parking in Antwerp work, and do you need to register for the LEZ?
Parking in Antwerp is easiest at a park and ride (P+R): all nine are outside the low emission zone. Foreign cars, except Dutch ones, must register once and for free, at the latest the day after entering the LEZ. Our accommodation in Antwerp South are outside the LEZ, about 0.2 km from P+R Olympiade.

You are driving to Antwerp for a project, a trade fair or a family visit. Two questions come up fast: will a camera fine your car, and where do you leave it for several days? We answer both from our building on the south side of the ring.
Where is the Antwerp LEZ, and which roads stay outside it?
The Antwerp low emission zone (LEZ) covers the inner city from the Singel to the Scheldt, plus Linkeroever on the Left Bank. Smart Ways to Antwerp, the city’s mobility site, says the zone applies day and night. It covers cars, campervans, vans, lorries and coaches. Cameras check number plates at the edge of the zone.
The motorway ring is outside the zone. The city keeps three short Singel sections out of the LEZ, so drivers do not enter it straight from the ring. That matters if you are heading for Antwerp South and Middelheim Park. You can drive round on the ring and leave it on the south side without entering the zone.
Our building at VIIde-Olympiadelaan 19 is outside the LEZ. On the city’s LEZ map, the nearest boundary is about 1.3 km away. Driving on into the centre inside the Singel, to the Grote Markt for example, does take you into the zone.
Note
Linkeroever is part of the LEZ. If you leave the motorway on the Left Bank, check your car first. The city publishes a route to P+R Linkeroever that avoids the zone.
Do you need to register a foreign car before parking in Antwerp?
Yes, unless the car has Dutch plates. A foreign car that meets the entry rules must be registered once with the city of Antwerp. The city has no data on foreign vehicles. Registration is free. Do it in good time, and no later than the day after you first drive into the zone.
What you need to know before you set off:
- Documents: the vehicle registration certificate and, if your car has one, the European certificate of conformity.
- Dutch plates: no registration needed if the car meets the rules. The city reads the Dutch RDW register automatically.
- Belgian plates: cars correctly listed in the Belgian and Flemish registers are admitted automatically, so a Belgian rental car needs no extra step.
- Stickers: a German Umweltplakette or a French Crit’Air sticker is not proof of access in Antwerp.
- Other cities: one registration covers every LEZ in Flanders, including Ghent. Brussels needs a separate registration.
Before the trip, enter your plate and the date of first registration in the city’s online check tool. It tells you whether the car may enter, and what to do if it may not.
Which cars may enter the Antwerp LEZ in 2026?
Diesel cars with Euronorm 5 or 6 and petrol cars with Euronorm 2 or higher may enter the Antwerp LEZ in 2026. On 28 November 2025, the Flemish Government withdrew the planned stricter rules. These norms therefore still apply after 31 December 2025. Electric and hydrogen cars are admitted as well.
Antwerp LEZ entry rules for passenger cars, 2026
| Fuel | Admitted | Only with an LEZ day pass |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel, including hybrid | Euronorm 5 and 6 | Euronorm 4 and older |
| Petrol, LPG or natural gas, including hybrid | Euronorm 2 to 6 | Euronorm 1 and older |
| Electric or hydrogen | Yes | Not needed |
Foreign cars in the “admitted” column still need the free registration. Older cars can buy an LEZ day pass a limited number of times per year. The city explains the passes, permits and current rates on its conditions for admission page. Buy a pass no later than the day after you drive in. The Flemish Government plans to review the rules again from 2027.
Parking in Antwerp: street, public car parks or P+R?
For a stay of several days, a park and ride is the simplest form of parking in Antwerp. The city runs nine P+Rs on the edge of town, all outside the LEZ, and describes them as easy and cheap. From each one you continue by tram, bus, bike or shared vehicle.
How the options compare:
- Street parking: spaces are limited, above all in the inner city. The closer you get to the centre, the more you pay and the shorter you may stay. Zones and hours are shown on the city’s map and on every parking meter.
- Historic centre: since 1 August 2023, visitors can no longer park on the street there. Only residents and permit holders may.
- Public car parks: paid garages in and around the centre, which save you circling for a street space.
- P+R: the cheapest choice for longer stays, with a tram or bus connection into town.
Street parking costs nothing on Sundays, public holidays and 11 July in most zones, except some event zones. Near the park, a blue zone called Middelheim needs a parking disc from Monday to Saturday.
Parking in Antwerp South near the Hoost accommodation
Hoost has no parking on site, and there is no free street parking at the door. The nearest park and ride is P+R Olympiade, about 0.2 km from the building. That is where we suggest guests leave a car for the length of their stay.
What to know about P+R Olympiade and the other park and rides:
- Where: Populierenlaan 2, 2020 Antwerpen, south of the city by exit 13 (Antwerp South) of the A12.
- Size: 189 spaces, with charging points for electric cars, including fast chargers.
- Cost: a low daily rate rather than free; the city page lists the current price. Validate your ticket at the payment machine before you drive out.
- Trams: De Lijn says trams 2 and 6 run past P+R Olympiade to Antwerpen-Centraal. Both also stop near our building.
There is also paid parking nearby. Ask us about it when you send your dates.
The building sits on the south side of the ring, next to the Kennedytunnel, about 3.2 km away by road. Crews heading for the Left Bank reach the tunnel without crossing the centre; see getting from Antwerp South to the port. Antwerp Expo is about 1.2 km away, and our Antwerp Expo parking guide covers fair days. Once the car is parked, getting around Antwerp by tram explains tickets and stops.
Tip
Register a foreign car before you leave home, even if you plan to stay south of the ring. A wrong exit or a diversion can take you into the zone.
When Hoost is not the right choice
Our apartments suit drivers who are happy to park at the P+R and take the tram. They are not the right choice in these cases:
- You need a private parking space or garage at the building.
- You want to park a van or small truck at the door every day.
- You want to stay in the historic centre itself.
- You need to register your address, or stay longer than 6 months in one booking.
For most other trips, a car at P+R Olympiade and two tram lines nearby work well. Read more about daily life on the south side of the city, or see what each of our apartments near P+R Olympiade offers.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Crit'Air or Umweltplakette sticker give access to the Antwerp LEZ?
No. The city of Antwerp says a physical sticker such as an Umweltplakette or Crit'Air is not proof of access. A foreign car must be registered online with the city instead.
Is an Antwerp LEZ registration valid in Ghent and Brussels?
One registration covers every low emission zone in Flanders, including Ghent. It is not valid in Brussels, which needs its own registration.
Where do you find the Euronorm of your car?
On the registration certificate, under V.9. The fuel type is under P.3. If no Euronorm is listed, the date of first registration decides whether the car may enter.
Do you pay for street parking in Antwerp on Sundays?
In most tariff zones, street parking costs nothing on Sundays, public holidays and 11 July. Some event zones are the exception, so always check the sign or parking meter.
